Introduction
All students will work individually, carrying out example analysis under the supervision of the trainer.
The first section of this course teaches you the techniques involved in getting your data into the STATISTICA environment. We cover features such as value labels, variable labels and calculation of new variables, all of which you can use to make your reports more easily understood.
The course deals in detail with tabular and graphical data summaries, and in learning to do this you learn the basic techniques for setting up data analysis that are used throughout the program, including when performing statistical analysis.
Several basic statistical methods are introduced, giving you the basic skills that you need to allow you to explore these and other techniques on your own when it is appropriate.
With good statistical analysis software you can very quickly find patterns in your data, test that differences are statistically significant and present conclusions in a convincing way. All this can be done in a much shorter time than with a corresponding spreadsheet analysis, and you can use many more techniques than available in a spreadsheet.
There are many graphical data presentation techniques available in STATISTICA that make it easy to get insights into your data, and that make it easy to show others what you have learned.
If you want to be sure that your conclusions are valid, and want to get high quality presentations of your results, then you should use the right tool for your job.
• Opening spreadsheets, and connecting to databases• The relationship between value labels and the underlying data• Calculating variables, using sequences and working with dates• Graphing data, and graphical data exploration• Tables of data summaries - categorical and continuous data• Comparing mean values - t tests and ANOVA• Multiple regression analysis • Copying output to Word• Using STATISTICA help
STATISTICA is statistical software that is used to summarise and report on data from surveys, businesses and scientific or engineering research. By attending a training course you learn to access the program's full potential.
Course attendees should have some background in data analysis, but need not be statisticians or have used statistics software before.
Even if you already use STATISTICA, this training course teaches important but less obvious features that will help you work more efficiently.
Dr Ray Hoare has degrees in mathematics, physics and chemistry and worked for many years in industrial and environmental science. For more than 10 years he has been helping people to analyse engineering, science and business data, as well as presenting seminars and training people in the use of statistical software.
About STATISTICA
STATISTICA is a comprehensive data analysis and graphical data presentation package, built with modern technology that makes it easy to learn and easy to integrate with all your other software.
One feature that sets STATISTICA apart from other programs of its type is the integrated nature of its design - the same conventions for setting up tasks apply whether you are summarising, graphing, making comparisons or data mining. This vastly speeds up the learning process.
Another difference that makes for efficient analysis is that you first define the essential elements of a procedure, and then choose repeatedly from a set of possible outputs related to that procedure.
