MATLAB 2008b Student Version

The MATLAB and Simulink Student Version Release 2008b provides major updates that address student demand for an easy-to-learn, powerful environment for both numeric and symbolic computations.

New object-oriented programming capabilities include full support for classes and objects, inheritance, methods, properties, events, and packages. These enhancements to MATLAB make programming more intuitive for the majority of science and engineering students wMATLAB 2008b Student Versionho are already familiar with object-oriented programming in languages such as C++, C#, and Java.

The new Student Version includes Symbolic Math Toolbox Version 5.1 with a new MuPAD notebook interface that supports embedded text, graphics, and typeset math for documenting and managing symbolic mathematics computations performed with the MuPAD language. It also provides methods and functions to link MuPAD notebooks and language with the MATLAB environment. With this capability, students gain a single integrated environment for working with both numeric and symbolic computations.

"The features in Student Version 2008b further simplify MATLAB programming for students, making them proficient with the program quickly so that instructors can spend more time on actual projects and course work," said Cleve Moler, chief scientist at The MathWorks and creator of MATLAB. "Students will benefit from code reuse and encapsulation capabilities that object-oriented programming offers; but more importantly, they can build on their knowledge of other object-oriented languages that they are already learning at school."

To help students ramp up faster, The MathWorks has produced free, self-paced online video tutorials designed to familiarise students on MATLAB and Simulink in less than two hours. The tutorials are available at http://www.mathworks.com/student/start.

Maple User Story: Mitsubishi UFJ Securities International
use Maple in Multi-asset Product Development

Maple FinanceThe latest release of Maple offers quantitative finance professionals a platform for maximising their productivity and efficiency, strengthening its reputation as their tool of choice. Maple’s powerful mathematical engine and sophisticated algorithms deliver a rich environment for modelling financial products and for process optimisation.  "In the world of financial options, analytical results are not always obvious, and testing for their existence can be a tedious and lengthy process. Employing Maple makes it very different; if a symbolic solution exists, Maple finds it quickly and correctly," said Igor Hlivka of Mitsubishi UFJ Securities International. He recently developed a series of applications using Maple for multi-asset product development and for deriving semi-analytical solutions to non-standard options where multivariate stochastic processes play a determining role.

Maple User Story: Optimal Control Design of a Voice Coil
Actuator Head in a Hard Drive

The ability to quickly and accurately access information stored on a hard drive is a crucial feature of modern computers. As the storage capacity of hard drives increases, data is stored more densely, making the data difficult to retrieve quickly and accurately. To access the stored information, modern hard drives use a voice coil actuator to position a read-write head to different tracks of the hard drive. Accurate positioning is challenging because of the inability of current control systems to physically measure the position of the head.

ChemDraw's Fragmentation Tool

ChemDraw's Fragmentation ToolThe ChemDraw Fragmentation toolbar contains the Mass Fragmentation tool as well as Dissociation and Retrosynthesis tools. The Mass Fragmentation tool splits molecules across a selected bond and creates fragments corresponding to the fragmentation that would have occurred in a Mass spec experiment. The Synthesis tool (Dissociation tool) produces a reaction in which the original structure is the product, and the fragments formed by breaking the bond are the reactants. The Retrosynthesis tool produces a reaction in which the original structure is the reactant, and the fragments formed by breaking the bond are the products.
